Can we reconcile after we start the divorce process?

Deciding to start the divorce process can be agonizing. You may feel like you don’t have any other option except to take a drastic step of filing. In the back of your mind, you may be wondering if taking this step will make things better or worse.

Some people wonder whether they are able to reconcile once the divorce process is underway. Couples are able to reconcile until the moment when the judicial officer signs the final decree. So whether you have filed or you are months into a divorce, you are able to reconcile at any point in the process.

If you are unsure about starting the divorce process, it is always helpful to meet with divorce professionals, including an attorney and/or a mental health professional. Divorce professionals can help you sort through the process itself as well as the emotional concerns that come with such a major life change.

Couples may struggle with issues that only come to a head after a drastic step such as filing for divorce. If you find that you are or can successfully address the issues that forced the decision, then reconciliation may be something that you consider.

If you have already started the divorce process, deciding to reconcile has its own implications. When you find yourself considering this as an option, be sure to consult with your divorce professionals along the way to protect yourself and your legal rights.
